Feature: Deptford Last Fridays
25 June 6.30-8.30 pm @ various venues in Deptford
Deptford Last Fridays has become a major arts event on the London social calendar. Galleries throw open their doors until 8.30 pm on the last Friday of every month, followed by a raucous ‘after party’ at The Old Police Station until late. Sample exhibitions, talks, events and openings, taking in the sights and sounds of late night Deptford along the way.
Beat the crowds and take a Deptford Last Fridays tour, taking a ‘behind the scenes’ look at exhibitions and artists studios. Each month is completely different, check the Deptford Art Map website for details.
Preview : Becks, music inspires art night, with DJ set by Vampire Weekend
11 June 2010, 10 pm opening @ The Amersham Arms
As Becks changes its focus, from art or music to art and music, they have commissioned artists to create new covers for iconic album covers, for instance, The Smiths album, ‘The Queen is Dead’ is made over by artist ‘Hellovan,’ and ‘Purple Rain’ by Price is made over by Kate Moross. A re-imagining of the Becks famous label has also been changing over 2009-2010.
As part of this, the clever Amersham Arms are linking their events to the Becks ‘Music Inspires Art’ festival, with a gig night including band of the moment ‘Vampire Weekend.’ This links New Cross to the larger music scene in the UK and cements New Cross as ‘Rocklands’ as dubbed by Rolling Stones magazine in 2008. Rock on Amersham Arms!

Review : Mulberry Tree Press
7th May - 11th July, Fri-Sun, 12-6 pm @ SE8 Gallery
SE8 Gallery has opened, and is opening again and again with some great exhibitions. Most recently the ‘Mulberry Tree Press’ transforms the gallery into an imagined publishing house, linked to a garden design by John Evelyn in Deptford. Artists in the broadest sense are invited to contribute to the project through displaying work in the gallery. Meanwhile the office is hard at work translating this into a published format, to create a huge published work at the end. This is a big project and one that changes on a weekly basis. Catch them at Deptford Last Fridays or pop in during the week.
