Raimund Hoghe, ‘L'Apres-midi’

A performance by ‘The Dance Umbrella’ performed at LABAN

LABAN is a huge draw for visitors to Deptford, nestled between industrial estates on Creekside in Deptford, it has one foot in Deptford and one foot in Greenwich, but stands on its own as a unique iconic piece of modern architecture, encapsulating the aspirations and creative energy of the area.

The performance ‘L'Apres-midi’ performed by Emmanuel Eggermont, a debut by Raimund Hoghe is a unique and insightful journey into contemporary dance. This is an adaptation of a piece by Vaslav Nijinsky, inspired by Debussy.

‘L'Apres-midi’ is a solo piece, minimalist yet powerful in its conception. The artist was seemingly limited on stage, both in movement, and physically by invisible vector lines being drawn throughout the performance. A small man worked constantly with the performer, marking out his performance space via two perfecty filled glasses of milk. This denoted purity and also acted like a cage to the on-stage performer, a possible nod to Swan Lake.

The soundtrack provided included classical pieces most importantly "Clair de lune" by Debussy repeated throughout the piece. Towards the end of the performance, milk was spilt and both artists started to draw words and motifs in the milk with their fingers. This was most effective and really brought the piece into a place between performance and art. This was a most pleasant evening, in the wonderful surroundings of LABAN.
