In the future, as part of an overall regeneration project, the area around Deptford Train Station and the old Victorian carriage ramp will transform what was the original railway yard.

A new, vibrant public space will embrace shops, galleries and a weekend creative industries market.

Eventually a new residential building designed by the world famous architect Richard Rogers will be built at the back of the carriage ramp.

First step in the regeneration of what was, in 1836, London’s first suburban railway station is the Deptford Project café, housed rather appropriately, in an old passenger carriage.

This is so much more than just a café whose coffee is sourced from sustainable farming projects worldwide and food home-made from ingredients produced locally – it’s also a showcase for artistic endeavor.

‘Made in 24 hours’, part of a regular Design Festival, demonstrates what can be achieved in one day of production with seven teams of designers from different disciplines brought together to create something artistic and innovative in a 24 hr period, thereby exposing what has to be described as ‘messiness’, the ‘unruliness’, the ‘complexity’ of the design process before marketable and salable product emerges.

So if you feel like combining a bit of culture with your carrot cake you know where to go.
