Cyber Stars
As we all know there are now enticing new dimensions out there – cyber-worlds, virtual realities and so forth. Avatar Body Collision (great name – avant-garde rock outfits eat your heart out!) inhabit these new ‘realms’ in a highly constructive and imaginative way.
They describe themselves as ‘a collaborative, globally distributed performance troupe formed by four women who met online in 2001’, presumably ‘bonded’ by mutual interests in art, drama and performance. Now united, they combine skills to fulfill vital roles as computer-programmers, writers and academics in the Avatar team.
They devise their shows using ‘Upstage’, their free web-based ‘cyberformance’ venue, and everything, including rehearsals, takes place online.
Their concept ‘Belonging’ premiered in Montreal and opened the Intimacy Festival at Goldsmiths College.
As they put it, ‘We live in Helsinki, Australia, New Zealand and Cyberspace’.
And, of course, London. And where else but Deptford where, undoubtedly, all artistic breakthroughs originate.
