We are tempted to try a rather feeble joke to the effect that the people at ‘You don’t bring me flowers’ know how to ‘knit’ the community together.
We refer to the fact that this operation, described as ‘an eccentric and indispensable part of local life’ is, in the first instance, a florist and coffee shop selling beautiful and unusual flowers but it’s also a gallery, a gift-shop, a theatre and more…
Accordingly, apart from the temptations of Fair-trade coffee, home-baked cakes and locally made honey, you can also enjoy dozens of arts events, including exhibitions of paintings and comedy performances.
And then, of course, there’s the knitting club… hence our attempt at humour at the outset of this review.

Not so long ago, real ale was just for CAMRA anoraks. But things are changing, largely due to local master-brewer Alastair Hook and his superb creations, including chocolate and raspberry flavoured tipples. The Union serves them all - the crowd is pleasantly mixed, the food is good, and the beer garden is heaven on a hot summer’s day.

Deptford is packed full of artists, designers and craftspeople and Red Door in Greenwich Market offers many of them an outlet. The tiny shop/gallery is packed with jewellery, ceramics, art and accessories: most items are one-offs and made locally. It’s perfect for gift-hunters - they also sell cards and wrapping paper.
