The Laban Dance Centre, architecturally, creatively and symbolically has had considerable impact in South East London, exemplifying the creative resurgence of this ‘neck of the wood’.
It is entirely fitting that our first recognition in the area of performing arts (Dance) should go to German-born Maresa von Stockert, director of Tilted Productions, who first studied in London at Laban in 1992-2003 before going on to further her dance education in New York.
After teaching and choreographing in her home country she returned to London in 1994 to set up her own dance company since when she has collected a number of prestigious awards including the 2005 Time Out Live Award for outstanding choreography. She is currently Associate Artist at Dance East and, from 2007, will be choreographer in residence at the South Bank Centre.
She and her company are much-applauded for their thoroughly provoking and visually striking dance theatre, incorporating particularly the use of props and video.
